The First Signs of Fall

I know it is still stifling hot in most parts of the country, but I am beginning to feel the very first beginning signs of fall. It is in the air; and some of the trees are already beginning to turn colors.

I am already beginning to get “fall fever”. And along with it comes visions of beautiul places like Vermont, Cades Cove in the Smokies, and our own beautiful mountains here in East Tennessee. We really have such a wonderful place to live, I can’t really be jealous of other places in the country. When Mother Nature spreads her blanket of fall colors in the mountains, it is something to see!

I just saw a man with the back of his pick-up truck loaded down with fire wood; a sure sign of the beginning of fall. But I’m glad I didn’t have to cut it and load it in the truck. Having had plenty of experience of that in the past, I would just as soon pass on that for now.

I just had my first trip of the season to the apple orchard. All they had at the present time was galas, so I purchased some of those to tide me over until September when the man at the orchard said the others would start coming on. Now if that doesn’t mean fall is around the corner, I don’t know what does.

I’m sure we will have plenty more sizzling days of summer left yet; but hang in there…..Fall is on the way!!

Great photographers

I was first introduced to great photography by Tom Payne, a local photographer who left here for the big city but has now returned home to his roots. When I first saw Tom’s work, I was simply astounded that someone could take a picture and make it look like a beautiful painting. His work has graced the pages ranging from the Los Angeles Times to National Geographic Books.

Then I saw the beautiful work that my wonderful cousin Rick had done on his wonderful photography site www.TodaysPhoto.org. Who would have ever thought that little skinny kid I use to play with in the mountains when we were growing up would turn out to be such an amazing photographer and writer. His picture of Backbone Rock is the best one I have ever seen of it. The wonderful photographers that fill this web site are so amazing. The work they do is outstanding.

Just when I think I have seen the best of the best, I see the amazing work of Winston “Rocky” Rockwell. Have you seen what this man can do with a camera? I am convinced after seeing his wonderful pictures and  commentaries on Rick’s web site, and his own web site www.northwestnaturalimagery.com,  that history will bear out the fact that he is one of the best photographers of nature and natural landscapes of our time and will go down in history with the likes of Ansel Adams and Diane Arbus.

Thank you to all of you great photographers out there for sharing your gift and talent with us.

Blue Berry Pie, Anyone?

It is that time of year again when the blue berries are ripe for the picking. So I made a trip across the mountain into the valley to visit Miss Ellen and her blue berry patch again.

We have been having a lot of rain and cooler than usual temperatures, but today was bright and sunny. A perfect day to go blue berry picking. There were already several people there when I arrived. I grabbed a couple of gallon buckets and headed to the patch with the others. I claimed a spot for myself and began picking. I could hear the other pickers talking and catching up on the latest news. Within a short time I had my bucket full and decided to call it a day. I left about the same time as another couple, so we rounded up Miss Ellen to settle our debt and be on our way.

I decided to stop in at Karen’s Raceway Grill to grab a good old fashioned hamburger and fries (hey, I had been working hard). It wasn’t too busy as it is a work day. There were a couple of farmers taking a break from their day to get something to eat and cool off a bit.

After satisfying my cravings, I headed on back across the mountain with my windows down enjoying the cool mountain breeze.

Now what do I fix first? Blue berry pie, blue berry jam, blue berry sauce for ice cream, or do I just dive in and have some just the way they are? Excuse me, please…………I have some serious decisions to make.
